The Healing Process: What to Expect After Getting a Tattoo

Understanding the tattoo healing process is essential for proper aftercare and ensuring your new ink looks its best. Immediately after getting a tattoo, your artist will apply a bandage or plastic wrap to protect the area from bacteria. This should be left on for a few hours to allow the skin to start healing. Once you remove the bandage, gently wash the tattoo with mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water, then pat it dry with a clean towel. It’s normal for the tattoo to feel sore and slightly swollen during the first few days.

As your tattoo heals, you’ll notice it starts to scab and peel, similar to a sunburn. This is a natural part of the healing process, and it’s important not to pick at the scabs or scratch the area, as this can cause scarring and affect the final appearance of your tattoo. Keep the tattoo moisturized with a recommended aftercare lotion, and avoid direct sunlight, swimming, and soaking the tattoo in water until it’s fully healed, which typically takes about two to four weeks. Following these steps will help ensure that your tattoo heals properly and retains its vibrant colors and details.
